Year 2008 : Web 2.0
Flash back (year 1988) : World Wide Web born.
Ok. I will explain you what I mean. Way back in the year 1988 when Sir Tim Berners-Lee created World Wide Web he had never expected that his creation would lead to a revolution and change the way the world connects.
The gift was given to us 19 years back but since then there has been tremendous changes in the world of internet. Today we live in an era of web 2.0. Many of us have more virtual or online friends then the friends in person, thanks to the social networking sites like facebook, orkut, myspace, pownce, etc. We are exploiting the power of web 2.0 to our fullest extent. We blog, we share and comment.
But have you ever thought about the consequences. Every damn thing that we write can haunt us for the rest of our lives and even may be after that. Recently, Sir Tim said:
“Imagine that everything you are is being read by the person you are applying to for your first job. Imagine that it’s all going to be seen by your parents and your grandparents and your grandchildren as well,” said Sir Tim.
“The danger is when you put something into a public space in order to share it with a few friends and in fact you’ve forgotten that it’s actually a public space or that the list of friends is huge or that some of them can’t be trusted not to put it somewhere else.”
I bet you do not wish this thing to happen with you.:)
Sir Tim himself believes that the internet population needs to be protected from the systems which are out there tracking the activity of users.
Underground activities like selling of private information, private pictures and data has rapidly increased. There are threats of national security issues being leaked through social networking sites. These are few reasons why social networking sites like facebook, orkut and others are under constant scanner.
We do not live in a perfect world. Nothing is perfect. Mistakes do happen and they are part of our learning’s..but what is the use? If these mistakes change the way we are..make us regret for the rest of our life..Is it better that we avoid sharing?

Not a fan of Lee. Bit of a Jimmy Wales really. Spouting on how he invented the web, like Arpanet wasn’t before him? I mean all he did was make hypertext, not the web. That was all there before him.
Akin to how Wales spouts he made wikipedia when it was co-founding really with Larry Sanger.
As for him concerned about people watching what you do and say and buy on the web, business already do that IRL. They monitor what you buy, when you buy and how you do, by inventory management, tracking, card usage, etc.
The web just makes it easier to get all that information in one fell swoop. But it is still there to be gotten.
And this is the findalmental issue I have with people and computers. That somehow they have it all worked out in their heads that the net is different that real life.
Case in point, children being lured into bad people’s homes. Now in the real world we have nasty people that would love to prey on kids. We tell them:
Don’t talk to strangers (yet we let them chat online)
Don’t accept gifts from strangers (Yet we let them get pics, vids and music)
Don’t give out a lot of info to strangers (Yet we routinely allow them to talk about school, where it is, when it is and if they take the bus or walk home)
It is totally contrary to the real world, yet these nasty ones exist in THE REAL WORLD!
IRL we would never walk up to someone on the street and tell them I am going on vacation to x place between x date and y date and that we’ll be staying in Z hotel.
But it seems more than reasonable to post it publically and then add, and if there are any of you on this social network in the area let me know so we can meet up.
So really who is to blame if IRL we would never give out such info to total unseen people, but we do regularly on the net?
The net is NO different than real life, because it IS real life. With real people, with real feelings, with real lives and sometimes real mental issues.
So to Mr. Berner-Lee, if you don’t want your crap spread all over the net, DON’T give it out.
NO ONE is forcing us to post personal crap or tell people what we bought or where it comes from. If you don’t want it out, be anon, like me.
