We recently caught up with Mr. Rohan Verma, the Head of Marketing for MapmyIndia and the creator of the mapmyindia.com portal and he hinted towards maps moving to the idiot box.

It seems like a logical step for the company primarily because it will add a lot to them in terms of brand awareness (which is largely lacking outside of the Web 2.0 space). It also does a world of good for them in terms of distribution as well because a of consumers in India do not have access to the Internet. When MapmyIndia does decide to distribute through television, it will be through Direct to Home Satellite services such as Tata Sky and Dish TV etc.

It isn’t really clear if MapmyIndia will tie up with one TV provider or will go for multiple tie ups. It also isn’t quite clear if MapmyIndia will be looking to charge consumers for these mapping services (Google Maps, which is comprehensive for the US is free there so i don’t see why MapmyIndia should charge for services in India).

It will be pretty interesting and useful for families to sit around their TV and plan their holidays in India using MapmyIndia’s services - most of which are quite useful.

P. S. Watch out for Rohan on WATShow soon!
