With vacations around, different travel portals will have their own offers for attracting the customers. The online travel market is increasing. Many new players are getting into the travel business with a thought of growing large. International players are now targeting the Indian travel business. Sometime back we have mentioned about Expedia to launch an Indian website. Expedia Inc, a US based global travel online company recently made their debut in the online travel business on 6th March’08. They have launched www.expedia.co.in for Indian customers.
Expedia Inc aims to target the Indian online travel industry. On this Sharat Dhall, managing director of expedia.co.in, the company’s India portal, said, “Indian online travel market is estimated to be worth over $2 billion for 2007-08 and is growing rapidly. The number of Indians travelling abroad is also growing”.
Expedia Inc will allow the customers to pay in rupees. Expedia Inc has been operating in 17 countries and has helped 26 million people to find a room for a night and 22 million travelers to board the flight.
The competition in this business is increasing. With International players coming in, the existing Indian companies are offering lucrative offers to retain their existing customers. Recently, ClearTrip.com in association with HDFC Bank Credit Cards has offered a 50% of cash back offer. They have associated themselves with Deccan, SpiceJet, Go Air, Indigo and Jetlite flights.
The offer although sounds tempting but it is not that good actually. 50% cash back is only valid on the base fare and the maximum amount returned back is Rs 2000 and not more.
I think the Indian players are going to tighten their seat belts in order to stay on the heights on this industry.
