The importance of getting the information and communication technology (ICT) to the rural areas cannot be overemphasized. Each time we rejoice the next upgrade in technology, deep inside we know there is a large section of India in villages, asking Internet : Woh Kya Hai. So while we might be awaiting the 500 Mbps connectivity to our home, a rural household in a village called Khandauli in Uttar Pradesh may be struggling to get power to light up the only bulb in the house.
Everybody says something needs to be done. Infosys has now decided to lead these “everybody” Intel is working with ACDI/DOCA – a non profit international organization – to build software application to aid the farmers and retailers involved in the agro-business chain. By successfully managing the inventory, the application aims to reduce the wastes and ensure the timely delivery of products from the farmers to the retailers thereby ensuring a good price for the farmers.
Binod HR, Sr VP and head at Infosys said –
“India business unit, Infosys Technologies Ltd. said, “Maintaining on-time, programmed delivery of fresh produce from a large and scattered production base is a complex and critical operation. This solution gives the organized retail sector access to a reliable small holder production base.”
The solution, basically a supply chain management system (SCM), streamlines the supply
of primarily fruits and vegetables from the farmers to the retailers, known in India as Mandis. The application takes care of a lot of aspects ranging from profiling of farmer clusters, scheduling, tracking, and traceability.
Farmers can have access to technical information including weather updates, database searches for information and images and market information.
The program is different from Government of India’s e-choupal initiative which deals with the crops, as against for fruits and vegetables for the Infosys project.
The project will debut at Nandani Fruit and Vegetable Growers Cooperative Society in Maharshtra with about 1700 farmers and will reach out to the rest of the country after that.

“Government of India’s e-choupal initiative”
Incorrect… It is a ITC Ltd initiative.
