Social Networking Sites have caused a communication revolution. But we should also remember the famous quote from the film Spider Man “With Great Powers, Come Great Responsibilities.” What I mean is the potential of social networking sites are growing and so are the threats.

Canada Defence DeparmentAnd Canada Defence Department seems to be taking the issue more seriously. Recently Defence Department of Canada advised its soldiers to refrain from posting personal photos and other important information on social networking sites like facebook due to security reasons.

“Al Qaeda operatives are monitoring Facebook and other social networking sites,”

“This may seem overdramatic … [but] the information can be used to target members for further exploitation. It also opens the door for your families and friends to become potential targets as well.”

This was stated in a memo which was obtained by CBC News.

Indian Government Few months back similar statement was also given by Indian Defence Minister A K Anton. He said:

“Defence personnel are periodically sensitized to nuances of military security and the implication of sharing classified information with strangers on social networks. They are also aware of the implications of such sharing under the Official Secrets Act.”

Terrorist might find social networking sites a platform for passing important information’s, as it might become almost impossible to track millions of messages being sent in different languages around the world. But if we want to make this world a better place to live then we need to fight against such anti social activities.

White Hat Virus SecurityWe need to do something which German government had declared few months ago. Like designing white hat viruses which can infiltrate and help police detect upcoming attacks and track the crucial information’s being passed from social networking sites to some extent.

Though the fact is we need to do much more than this, but someone has to take the first step somewhere.

With great connectivity, comes the hazard od malice and exploitation. The idea to get connected via ones “friends” seems good, but on planets like Facebook, the word “Friends” itself takes a different meaning.
    The authorities better be looking.
