.IN Domains to Overtake .COM in 2008!

We blogged yesterday about regional domains coming to the forefront soon. Not too long ago .IN domains were introduced as an indian domain extension but it had gone far beyond just being that. News has it that lots of international players are booking .in domain name as .in can stand for internet or international and can even be used in context of speech term very much like how popular blogs like trak.in and pluggd.in have used them.

 .in

Cool terms that i can think of right now are whats.in or iamtravel.in or justchill.in and many others if you just use your imagination. Ofcourse these many of these domains would be booked by domain squaters. According to Net4 COO Desi Valli, “The total .com registrations from India are about 475,000. The .in domain registrations from India will overtake .com sites in 2008.”

Even domain extentions like .us .tv .fm have been used very innovatively like del.icio.us and .tv for video websites and .fm for online radio/audio streaming websites like last.fm. Few people know that .us is for us centric sites and .tv is the country code top level domain (ccTLD) for the island nation of Tuvalu while .fm is  for the Federated States of Micronesia. Just goes to show that the internet is not only innovative with applications going forward it would also get innovative with domain name. As Bhavin Thakuria of Directi states we could soon see a .hr for hr sites and .am for am radio online going forward as well. All of this just going to add to the business possibilities and use of domains in context on the web.

  1. http://moinmo.in/ is one domain hack by famous wiki system

  2. Even there was an old news that says, Indian corporates are keen to grab “.asia” domain name.

But, a very strong point to note is:-
If a site’s extension is “.com” then you type the name and press ctrl enter keys to open it up. Or you can simply type the name and press enter. (user-friendly)
On the other hand, sites with “.in” or any other extensions require to be typed correctly to open.

Like you have said that “.in” fits for both India and International, “.com” fits for “community” too as Internet is going collaboration and community based.

  3. I Agree with your points rupesh! :)

  4. One could change the default setting of what
    CTRL+ENTER does in IE.
How do I change what CTRL+ENTER does in IE?

  5. @Ravi,
I agree with you, but how many people working in corporates have the privileges of “Registry Editing”?
Moreover, there are browsers apart from IE (though it is the most popular) and different operating systems apart from Microsoft (though most used again).
What if you are mobile and constantly work on different computers?
Also, will you change the “ctrl + enter” key setting just for a few sites?

  6. Very interesting stuff Rajiv. I agree that the dot com domain name is getting a bit saturated the way the 1-800 phone number did.

However, I think instead of the .in domain suffix becoming popular it will be the .ws domain suffix, which stands for website. This domain was created in the late 90’s, but was slow to grow in the early 2000’s. Now it is picking up and more and more people are getting their hands on good .ws domain names.
