Indian Social Networks Pursuing Social Ads on Facebook

We recently blogged about Ravi Shastri being affiliated with ibibo.com and we have now noticed that ibibo is pursuing Social Ads on Facebook.

On one level this shows that Indian Companies are willing to experiment with new forms of marketing online but i doubt this kind of a strategy works for Ibibo - are they trying to engage audiences within  a social network onto their Social Network?

In their defense however, the ad is culture centric and does not look to promote ibibo the social network – it looks to promote the cricket blog by Ravi Shastri. The question however is – will this generate repeat responses? Celebrity blogging has worked so far.

BigAdda.com is another network that was momentarily pursuing social ads on Facebook – theirs however was not a strategy as smart as ibibo’s – the ad was trying to sell BidAdda the Social Network. This strategy is quite bizarre considering BigAdda has gone on record to say that they are targeting Tier II and Tier III Cities. Those audiences are not on Facebook!

Ibibo’s strategy is a case of smart use of social ads; BigAdda in this case has not been able to maximize the utility of this medium. I have seen the BigAdda ad but i haven’t really been able to find it today and get a screenshot – if anyone manages to do so please email it to me on harshil(at)watconsult.com
