Contextual ads are hot on the internet. Hot enough for Microsoft to shell out close to $ 45 billion to acquire Yahoo and big enough to do whatever it takes to stop this acquisition.
The next logical step is, well the mobile phones. There are more cell phones than there are computer screens. And there is a larger market that can be tapped via Mobile advertising. If contextual online advertising is what made Google, then contextual mobile advertising can be the deciding factor on who will ultimately control the ropes of the digital marketing game.
India has been making consistent progress into mobile advertising. A lot of companies seem to have realised where the next wave of digital advertising is heading. SMSGupshup.com, Zest, Flytxt, and Mobisolv are all startups trying to cash in on the growing mobile advertising market.
Joining the game is IMI Mobile. With its Ad-Ring application, IMI Mobile claims to have developed what it calls the first application that is “business intelligent” and that can render ads based on the subscriber’s VAS data usage.
In another development, Buongiorno has announced to launch what it calls a “Mobile Social Network” in various countries. Branded as “Bing“ , the application allows any Java-enabled phone to get connected to the users in the same friend circle and exchange messages just as in chat. As the application is Java enabled, it should work on most of the phones.
