In India Gaming is certainly the next trend especially when portals like games2win and zapak.com are helping it to flourish. Zapak owned by ADAG (Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group) has always been known for its aggressive marketing strategy. Why wouldn’t they, especially when they get all the required resources from their parent company.

In a game called “Baatman” zapak is trying to promote its parent company Reliance Communication and demotes their competitors Podafone and Hairtell (of course you get my point.. but in case you didn’t it is Vodafone and Airtel). The game is Reliance Communication Centric. As a player all you need to do is to activate Reliance towers and bar Podaphone and Hairtell towers as the game refers them as “useless Podafone and evil Hairtell towers.”

Rohit Sharma, COO of Zapak Digital Entertainment, said, “We are simply a platform. If a brand wants to use it, we provide space. We’ll remove the game if any company or organisation has any problem with the same.”

Sanjay Behl, head, brand and marketing, Reliance Communications said, “We are number one in the telecom industry when it comes to connectivity or any other aspect and we’ve used all possible channels to make this fact known to our consumers.”

When the spokesperson of Airtel and Vodafone were contacted they refused to comment on the game.

In a situation where companies are preferring to be silent Mr. Pwan Duggal the owner of a law firm and working in the fields of cyberlaw, intellectual property rights and information technology believes that both (Vodafone and Airtel) companies can easily file a law suit against this “hitting below the belt strategy” and also “It is purely a case of taking pot-shots on established brands and these companies, can take it to court, which in turn can grant an injunction.”

Although Zapak can claim that the game is purely a fantasy. Mr. Duggal says that the court has the power to see beyond what is visible. “An injunction can be granted and the website can be sued and asked to pay damages.”

Really sounds pathetic to me. I mean we all are aware about the cold war between all the mobile service providers and this game has definitely taken it to a new level. It will be interesting to see whether Vodafone or Airtel pay back zapak or other gaming portal to launch a similar game with a theme to demote Reliance Communication. Or they file a case against them. IF in case they plan to come up with the game then I would love to see it on Zapak.
