Internet service in India and neighbouring countries were affected due to the damage done to undersea link between India and the east coast of USA and UK.

Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) President Rajesh Chharia said repairing will take another 15-20 days.

“Majority of the firms are trying to restore their connections through the Pacific Region, which is increasing the latency period”

There were several cable cut reported by some ship near Alexandria, Egypt.

The ISPs affected were Videsh Sanchar Negative Limited, ADAG’s FlagTel, Spectranet etc.

A lot of outsourcing companies were affected and work could not be resumed till late.

Bombay Stock Exchange , however was not affected as it was connected through VPN.

India has, of late, become a major outsourcing destination. Internet has crumbled the barriers of geographies. A lot of big and small companies depend on the Internet to conduct their business. Yesterday’s event was an important eye-opener for all those involved in the internet-related or internet-enabled business. If we are so heavily dependent on the Internet, we better have an alternative connection in place. Redundancy is an important in information technology. How this was ignored with respect to the nation’s overall Internet connectivity, is surprising.

What? Did I read that correct, ins’t VPN traffic supposed to flow on a public network? Internet in this case?

If they are connected using their own network backbone (wires, satellites, et cetera) they already have a private network in that case. So how does VPN comes into picture?

People are using VPN technology to expand their local network across the world to using Internet!
