Proto.in which concluded last weekend has some interesting internet startups strut their stuff on the podium. Some of them were unheard of but on presentation seemed like some very good opportunities catering to unattended markets. Here is lowdown on those startups and what we liked in them.

viewspaperTheViewspaper - This is one startup that was bubbling with enthusiasm at the Proto event. Co-Founded by a 22 and 20 year old the startup is about youth voicing their views on a common platform and causing a revolution. Yes thats theviewspaper for. They started 5 months ago and since then have been able to garner support from 110 youth’s across India. They have also built in a newspaper like system where a panel of editors screen content for irregularities before its posted on theviewspaper.

On the whole a very interesting startup which has still to figure out a revenue model (besides for the obvious ads aspect.). One the whole it did look like they were able to cross the initial hurdle when it comes to crowdsourcing of content by already convincing 110 users to submit content but what needs to be seen is how they scale operations and ofcourse content creation to reach out to possibly a global audience.

instablogsInstablogs.com - Instablogs has been around since 2005  and even WATBlog has reviewed this startup over a year back. It was interesting to actually meet the people behind what is claimed to be India’s largest blog network. Instablogs has over 130 blogs on its roll which range from stuff like lifestyle, technology and even health care. They claim 2.5 million page views a month and over 12000 registered users on their site. There is no registration required to read content.

Current revenue source for Instablogs is google ads and im sure they are doing well on that front as these ads are above the content (making clicking on them a higher probability). Internationally there are blog networks like B5Media and even instablogs Founder Ankit Maheshwari stated that major portion of his traffic was international. As far as non focussed blog networks are concerned their longetivity and ability to scale is directly dependant on how they can create a blog ad network which can easily attract good advertisers that pay them a higher premium than what google ads might ever.

hover.inHover.in - In one line this is a Kontera (In Text Ads) meets Snap (Link preview tool) startup. Hover is founded by Arun of Trak.in a very well read blogger on business and technology. This startups is an outcome of Arun’s own problems that he faced in finding the right kind of monetization strategy for Trak.in.  The good part about Hover is that is allows the publisher to customize the content of the widget that pops when one mouse overs on the links.

In text advertising has not been well recieved internationally due to the fact that they deceive the visitor of the website in thinking that the link is a authentic link to another content and not an ad. By combining the link preview tool to the in text ad model hover.in to some extent does dilute this deception but nonetheless many unaware users would fall for it and may find the experience deceiving. On the whole a nice attempt at taking and two existing concepts and adding value by merging them.

atoneplaceAtoneplace.com - Another very simple startup. Its real estate classified which attempts to serves not only the end consumer but the entire value chain right from the developer to contractor to estate agent. Atoneplace is currently focussed on the NRI market looking at buying properties in India.

There is nothing very exciting about atoneplace besides for the fact that its looking at a consumer + enterprise model. On the whole this market is pretty crowded with now naukri.com launching AllCheckDeals.com after launching 99acres. Even ConsimInfo (Bharatmatrimony Group) and People Interactive (Shaadi.com Group) are in the same space with their respective portals.

antyaAntya.com  - One more seach engine. But this one attempts at the merger model too i.e. the merger of two concepts search + discovery. Antya.com whose founders we interviewed recently has been positioned as a search and discovery too for brand websites. It plans to tap on to the longtail of small business websites as well. Antya also has plans to go global by lauching Antya Uk and others.

Currently antya is seed funded by Vivek Pahwa of Desimartini fame (The entrepreneur turned seed investor).Currently Antya is looking to scale operations and is aggressively looking for funding. On the whole the concept looks like it may have a low use case scenario for an evolved audience but maybe the tier 2 and tier 3 audience might take to it. It really depends how antya plans to position and market its offering.

Thats it from the internet base of Proto. Do drop in your thoughts on these startups as giving them honest feedback will be great for the internet startup ecosystem in India.
