Today almost everyone is aware about the power and potential lying in the social networking sites. When talking about them I can never miss out the name “Orkut “being one of my favorite. Since the time it was introduced in late January, 2004 there has been a significant rise in the number of people using Orkut. Below are some interesting stats after the introduction of Orkut.
As it was gaining acceptance and popularity from people orkut was surrounded by the famous controversy of Huy Zing. What you people aren’t aware about it? Never mind I will share it with you. Huy Zing was one of the early users of the orkut who had created more than 600 communities for U2 band, Vietnamese food and some hot communities like “Fly Chicks for the Geeky Guy” and “G-Spot Expedition.” These communities were more successful in creating discussions than the normal ones. It was almost 30 additive days that Zing had spent on orkut until he was “killed” by the orkut administrators along with his many communities. Although Zing claimed that he was given no explanation or warning for the same.
His “orkut death” brought a revolution. Many of the users started creating communities discussing his sudden disappearance from the orkut. They also started creating communities like Come Back Huy Zing”, and also “Come Back Come Back Huy Zing” which were again deleted by the administrators. Until one of the user himself altered Huy’s pic and replaced it by his own on orkut stating Huy we miss you. This became a trend and sooner everyone started following it.
Huy’s death was the cause of freedom allowing the users to do whatever they wanted to do. Later on Huy was re-instated as an “Orkut-certified” member who cannot be jailed.
Well.. let us leave the controversy behind for some time and discuss something interesting. When talking about orkut the first thing to hit my mind is its feature “scrapbook.” People have using scraps effectively for connecting to other users. Later on additional features like videos were added to orkut. But never the less, scraps is the most frequently used feature. Daily millions of scraps are being sent and received around the world.
We got some stats related to scraps which might just interest you. Recently it has been noticed that members from the island nation of Grenada tops the scrap counts with an average of 1877 scraps. well scraping is increasing the time and bandwidth wasted on net by the users….. people even scrap when they are online … kudos to orkut for their revenue generation scheme… but this is costing us time which can be invested for other useful stuff
