How do they make money?

As IPRS licensee they pay:

Rs 10 Lakhs flat annual charge OR 15% of Gross Revenue whichever is higher.

Additionally, an EPHEMERAL charge (Musicindiaonline pays to the Licensor storage fees for the temporary storage of licensed Works on the musicindiaonline's servers) of Rs 2/- per song per annum is charged

The other music licensing agency in India Phonograpic Performance Limited (PPL) charges 0.06{Six Paisa} Paisa Per Performance for all the Audio Transmissions OR 35% of the advertisement Revenue whichever is higher,along with a MG(Minimum Gaurantee) of Rs. 10,00,000/- ( Ten Lacs only) for One Year which is Non-refundable but creditable to the royalty against the System Generated Usage Reports.per song.

IPRS was also going to shift to this charging model of PPL.

Are we saying all these charges are paid through google advertisements?

Rhydhun scores over musicindiaonline.com by offering excellent sound quality and also it is advt free. I guess they are planning to add feetures like downloading music tracks in to mobile devices/computers. Rhydhun is a boon for die-hard music enthusiasists like me who has been waiting for a music player like this. Hats off to Anand Aiyer, the creator of Rhydhun.

@Just curious,
Songs are cached to the local hard disk drive, but can only be accessed after logging into the Rhydhun desktop client.
and moreover, musicindiaonline.com site says- "MusicIndiaOnLine.com is an IPRS licensed website"
you can contact them for more clarification.

@Abhishek,
yes you are true. But, the point is - why would someone use Rhydhun if there is musicindiaonline.com?

IMHO, They are also providing an option of a desktop application because it is more sticky. And if they don't do it someone else might and eat up their market share.

Isn't this still illegal? Earlier you went to site and streamed music, now you are actually using client and listening to it. Caching 300MB *may* save bandwidth but it can also be interpreted as saving music on your hard drive.....
