The Internet And Asia: How the Internet will affect the Societies We Create?
Email It!
At the IAMAI India Digital Summit, Yat Siu, Founder and CEO of Outblaze Hong Kong, Manish Vij of SITG and Vipul Kant Upadhyay of Merinews.com discussed this topic.
Here is What we Think is most Relevant:
English will be integrated into Internet Asia. Countries where this does not happen, will be isolated. Consider Korea as an example – it is advanced but not inclusive. “code” is in English (C++ etc.)
Code transcends cultural barriers because it can be shared. Its thus a sharing code, a social code and a Global code.
It is also more “acceptable” now to be an Internet Geek – its cool infact.
The Internet in Asia will also be an empowering and equalizing tool. Farmers can get information on prices etc. and thus maybe then combat things like restrictive trade practises.
E – Choupal is an evergreen example.
The Future
Code as a cultural ambassador
Social Change, networking, friendships
Change in Asian Governments
24/ 7 Thinking
Death of 9 – 5
Causes of Concern
Your Virtual Identity – you and your company will only be as good as Google makes you out to be.
The New Digital Divide – The “can” and “cannot” – hackers have advantages etc. This may lead to abuse. The other disadvantages may also arise with respect to people being “able” to get a higher page rank etc.
The next generation: - More virtually equipped - More multitasking - Multiple identities (many virtual identities) - Internet will still be culturally relevant though. Eg. In China they want more text as opposed to the US. In India Video will obviously do better than text due to our affinity to picture and sound.
Asia will lead the World. Soon hopefully. Moving from sweat shop to idea house. This comes from National Pride.
Its also important to know 399 million of the Worlds Internet population is from Asia. The highest in the World.
Factors that may stop these changes in India:
Avg. Broadband speed. A 100 Mbps pipe in Japan costs an equivalent of Rs. 800. Even a 256 kbps connection in India will cost more!
Broadband penetration is pathetic. The Internet in India is yet not ubiquitous.

Disagree on the Raymondesque ‘English is it’ bit.
Non-english speakers may have to read English, but they will continue writing in their native languages if there is more cohesiveness than adhesiveness.
