Dan Neary, The VP for Emerging Markets, eBay and Shailesh Rao, MD of Google India spoke about the above mentioned topic.

This post will deal with Fundamental Trends on the Internet Today With Respect to:

-       Users

-       Touchpoints

-       Discovery

-       Activities

Users: Gen Y; users born between 1980 – 1995. A generation brought up on the Internet. Think about it, kids are getting laptops at a younger age, they are using iPods and get their music online, and they communicate a lot on the Internet compared to telephones earlier.

Gen Y spends more time on the Internet, uses less TV and Blogs a lot more!

Gen Y is the Influencer in terms of purchasing as well as use on the Internet.

Touch Points: Historically it was about the ‘browser’. Now the Internet is ubiquitous more than ever. So content is accessed from the web without really going to a browser. Widgets are a classic example. The Kindle, the Wii, the iPhone – are all examples of this. Mobiles are also examples of the ubiquitous Internet. One wont see consumer devices now without Internet capabilities.

Search: Initially it was all about keywords. There is now natural language search, picture search (searching for items using pictures), behavioural searchserendipity search, and tagging.

A lot of user generated content is  also generating ‘search’ – and relevant search at that.

Activities: Video is an important touchpoint. So video is used to create, communicate, and entertain. It’s the “dawn of the video age”

  1. The best examples of user generated content are those using WiBro, a variant of WiMAX. This is the only mediaum which supports live video in quality good enough to be broadcast as user generated content.
Operators such as KT WiBro provide a rich environment to facilitate such usage. The spread of mobile WiMAX in the next one year will give a new dimension to interactive TV, UCC and Web 2.0 services

  2. Thanks Amitabh - thats some real insight. Something new i learnt today!
