Online and Offline Gaming- A Threat to TV?

Gaming in India is booming. As per nasscom, The Indian gaming industry was estimated at nearly $48 million in 2006-07; and is expected to cross $424 million by 2010, representing a CAGR of 72% over 2006-2010.

 

Types of Games

 

Gaming in all three categories — mobile, online and console gaming is showing a dramatic increase in numbers in 2007, coming especially from smaller towns and at lower price points.

 

Online gaming also making a mark with about three million gamers, says an internal study done by online and mobile gaming provider. With rise of Broadband, the no. of gamers and free online games are going to rise.

 

Launches of consoles like XBOX 360 and Sony PS3 are adding fuel to this increased growth rate. More and more players are buying out this gizmos and getting lured to it

 

Companies like Zapak, and Sify, apart from offering online gaming are also opening up Game cafes and attracting more and more youngsters to their café for gaming tournaments and game series

 

Online sites like Games2win, Zapak, Indiagames are feeling the pressure from mobile games and offline games like TV console games. So they are offering free to download games for mobile and PC’s. Paid subscribers numbers are also increasing

 

In general, strategy and action games are leading the show, with causal and sports games following then up and racing games are taking care of the left-over

 

Demographics of Gamers

 

The demographics of gamers are the youth and teenage kids who are getting glued to gaming whether online or offline.

 

As per a general study, it’s seen that almost 40 per cent of the gamers are from the age-group of 22-35. Working professionals constitute 18 per cent. Almost 87 per cent of the gamers in India are men while women constitute just about 13 per cent.

 

Effect on Media Companies

 

However, the major concern is the timing of the game playing sessions. The ideal time for the gamers are in evening from between 7 pm and 12 midnight. Which means the prime time of television is eaten out by this gamers.

 

Advertising companies will soon have start acknowledging this trend by incorporating the same in their media plans and also try participate / sponsor more and more gaming contest and competitions. Such trends indicate that soon Gaming as an entertainment medium might become a threat to TV. What do you think?
