obopayObopay is a mobile payment transfer solutions provider based out of the US which is slated to launch its services in India in February. Obopay plans to take the debit card route to mobile payments rather than the credit card route which the current players like mcheck and ngpay are taking in the Indian market.

Inorder to transfer or to accept money through the obopay service one would have to register with ones bank and generate a pin which can be used for mobile transactions.  Obopay can be accessed by downloading an application on the mobile or by smsing or calling up.

Obopay, which has so far raised $48 million through venture funding from the likes of Citibank and Societe Generale, is looking at raising further funds during this year to expand its marketing network. Obopays entry into the mobile money transfer scene will surely hot up things in the space and it will be interesting to see the partnerships and tieups the players in this space make inorder to be one up on each other.
