The year 2008 is here and we have seen an enormous growth in the Social Networking scenario in India over the past one year. This ever growing market has changed the face of the Internet and its content today. Lets go through some of the highlights in India’s Social Network developments over the past year.

Orkut sustained its place as the most popular Indian Social Networking site. With being involved in controversy and the news for both the right and the wrong reasons, Orkut managed to innovate and upgrade to keep up with the growing pressure it was under from Facebook.

With the launch of RSS, Photosharing and Orkut opening up its API to developers, one can say that Orkut realizes that its only interactive feature, i.e. scrapping will not help sustain its popularity. It faced alarming conflicts with the media and the Shiv Sena thanks to the various controversy’s revolving Orkut with all the fake profiles etc. Thankfully it still managed to win the MTV youth icon of the year award with the likes of Amitabh Bachchan and the I phone.

With the addition of privacy features it might just manage to save grace and retain some of its declining female audience.
Facebook on the other hand has only risen in terms of both popularity and page ranks over the past one year. Its alarming number of applications only seems to be increasing and so does its popularity. In a major turn around, Facebook stake being bough by Microsoft for a staggering $ 240 million sky rocketed facebook’s market value. With numerous attempts to hack facbook id’s and what not, facebook in its global initiative seems to be undeterred and only progressing further. A lot can be expected in 2008 from the same.

BigAdda, the Reliance venture into social networking seems to be limping its way through 2007. With huge advertising budgets in forms of TVC and outdoor as well as print, BigAdda did not manage to create the impact it was supposed. A simple lesson that reliance should learn by now. To be able to make waves in already growing social networking scenario you, first need to come up with something unique to be able to work.

MingleBox and Desi Martini played the tortoise in the otherwise high paced race to dominate in the social networking scene which is mostly governed by the likes of Facebook and Orkut today. Mingle Box managed to get $ 7 million funding from Sequoia Capital.

That’s about the last i heard of them. Here’s a look at some of 2007’s highlights, with regards to Social Networking.

  1. Man !! I think there are a bit too many SN clones out there. I think there needs to be more innovation in this space.
