The new year is here and the Indian Internet space has grown by leaps and bounds over the past one year. Heres a look at the activities of some of India’s Portals

 Rediff

Rediff has had an elusive and progressive new year, with new introductions to its services and tie ups alike. The portals revenues have risen through 2007 and it doesn’t seem like Rediff wants to slow down. With I –share, unlimited email storage and Rediff books being launched, it managed to stay refreshing and popular. It kept up with competition by introducing a messenger application in its web mail and it’s QnA as a reply to Yahoo Answers. The portal did not ignore the local market and launched itself in regional languages as well. Another highlight was all the speculation about Rediff being taken over by Google and Yahoo followed by some unidentified merger. However, come 2008 Rediff has not been taken over and it looks like the company is to continue on its roll, a bright year to look forward to for Rediff. Here are some highlights that caught our attention.

Yahoo

2007 was a progressive year for Yahoo as well. One of the reasons why it’s still among the top Indian portals. Mergers and tie ups were the way to go and a lot of strategic mergers were seen under Yahoo’s belt. Major highlights were the launch of Yahoo Answer’s Ask the planet 2007 and Yahoo One Search. Some more tie ups for Yahoo travel and the site seemed raring to go just before it fell into some trouble after a blogger alleged that her recipes were directly stolen by Yahoo. Another noticeable feature was the launch of Yahoo Mail for the blind and the integration of Flickr on Yahoo’s image search. Yahoo followed other portals and launched the messenger application on its web mail as well along with its feasibility of use with all messenger applications like MSN, AIM, ICQ for yahoo mobile.

Msn India

Local penetration was MSN’s formula for 2007 as it went about launching a host of varied services for the local and personalized market in India. Its novel initiative to increase registrations, namely coolhotmail.com was a huge investment and did manage to make some waves. Its long term effects are yet to be seen. Tie ups to make sure that its services had quality were also seen. In a huge development Msn purchased stake in the ever popular networking site, Facebook.com to up its ad sales through a staggering $240 million dollar deal.
Msn also expressed its desire to occupy Yahoo as it started feeling the pressure of it lagging behind Yahoo and Google in terms of search engine users.
