Social networks are all over the place. Yesterday, we blogged about Facebook launching Little Black Book, which provides the base for dating on Facebook and Match.com.

Earlier we had blogged about Fropper.com shaking hands with Saadhan, a company providing free telephonic information on AIDS. Social networks are becoming crucial in spreading social awareness among the people.

Facebook and UNICEF together are spreading awareness on Immunization of a child. For this Facebook has launched a feature called “Charity Gift”. This application allows the users to give a gift worth $17 to their friends or family. This purchase of the gift will enable the UNICEF to immunize one child. The immunization will be against the deadliest diseases like pertussis commonly known as whooping cough, childhood tuberculosis, tetanus, polio, measles and diphtheria. This effort will save 2 million kids that die every year due to these diseases.

Social networks truly seem to be the perfect medium for spreading social awareness. As they posses the power of -

a) popularity: Social networks are very popular among the people. Facebook is popular due to the security and applications they provide.

b) viral impact: Its very easy to spread news among the people due to the notification feature that updates the user about the lastest updates about their friends as to what is happening or happened.

c) population: UNICEF selected Facebook due to its popularity. According to the stats over 58 million of the world’s population is using Facebook.

This partnership proves that social networks can play a very important role in society for spreading awareness. Let’s hope that UNICEF together with Facebook is able to reach their target and are successful in eradicating those killer diseases.
