It has been a quite long time since we blogged about making money through blogs, specially after the news that TechCrunch earns $240k p/m from advertising, other bloggers in the race are Steve Pavlina who earns $40k p/m from blogging activities, Yaro Starak earned $6,549 in March 2007 and many more. Many people are still under the impression that Google adsense is the best way to earn money. So I have researched which new methods the new generation bloggers are trying out to earn money from their blogs. Below are few common techniques of earning money through blogs:

1) First and prime step should be setting up a blog and choosing a good blogging platform. I personally prefer WordPress because it provides me with cool plugins.

2) Get Paid For Writing – Well.. If you are a good writer then I have good news for you. There are many advertisers that pay you for writing on stuffs like websites, products, services, etc. Pay Per Post is one of the example.

3) Freelance Writing – Your writing skills might just come handy to some blogs. Not everyone is basically a potential writer. So corporate blogs generally look out for free lance writers who could write few articles for them. Fab Freelance Writing Blog is one of the examples.

4) Advertising – There are various ways to sell your advertising space on a blog. The common ones are listed below:

· Contextual Advertising – They are Advertising that appears on a web page that is targeted directly towards the individual user who is visiting that web page. Programs like google adsense, Chitika’s eMiniMalls, WidgetBucks, Text Link Ads, Azoogle Ads, Intelli Txt, DoubleClick , Tribal Fusion, Adbrite, Clicksor, AdHearUs, Kanoodle, Pheedo, TextAds, Bidvertiser, Fastclick and Value Click are few common ad programs used by bloggers to earn money.

· CPC Advertising – There are various ad systems which pay the blog owners when a visitor clicks on their ads. The cost per click may vary depending upon the traffic of the blog.

· Impression Based Ads – These are ads where blog owner earns some amount every time when a person views the advertisement. These ads are of great use if you have a great traffic. The income generated from these ads are also very less.

· Text Ads – They are advertisement using text-based hyperlinks. It is another cool program which helps you to generate income. The best part being that you can choose ads to be displayed on your blog.

5) Affiliate Programs – This program helps you to maximize your earnings by earning commission. When a visitor buys some product from your site you earn some commission from the net amount paid by the buyer. Amazon, Linkshare, Clickbank and Commission Junction provides this facility.

6) Donations – Yes you read it right. The word is donations. No need to be astonished. Lately people are opting for this option to help them to grow their blog.

7) Sponsorship – There are many potential advertisers out there who might be able to figure out the potential growth of your blog and may provide you with the resources required to grow your blog.

8] Consulting – Bloggers now no longer need a marketing background for consulting. All you need is to have your blogging base clear. Today business firms are hiring new bloggers for consulting them to setup a Blog, SEO or SMO. These bloggers then earn a good income by charging them higher prices.

9) Blogs On Sale – The new trend that seems to be gaining momentum is selling of well established blogs. Well established doesn’t mean a blog with a page rank of 8, 9 or 10. Business firms prefer more of buying blogs starting from Page Rank 5. As it will be costing them much less when compared with higher Page Rank Blogs of 8, 9 or 10.

10) Employment Opportunities – Many bloggers are now being hired by potential business firms and are paid more than what they usually earn from blogging. It is their blogging knowledge which interests most to these firms.

11) Books – Once well established, you will see many bloggers writing books. As you expertise in your field you can see publishers running and coming with ideas about writing a book.

I have tried my best to add all possibilities. If in case I have missed out any do let me know. Comments and Feedbacks appreciated.

  1. Great ideas on what to do with your blog. If you are looking for a text linking company to advertise with or simply place them on your website, you should check us out here at LinkWorth. Thanks and Happy Holidays!

  2. Nice post. I just wanted to give a differing opinion on a couple of points you mentioned:

    1. Get Paid for Writing: Avoid getting paid to write posts/reviews on your own blog. For example, you mentioned PayPerPost which pays bloggers to write reviews of PayPerPost’s customer’s products on the bloggers own blog. This falls on the borderline of being unethical - and Google has punished all users of PayPerPost by reducing their PageRank (in some cases to zero). It is very likely that other pay-for-review schemes will run into similar problems. Handle with care.

    2. Freelance writing: This is where you get paid by someone to write on their blog. This is unlikely to pay a lot - a few hundred Rupees per post in most cases. This is unlikely to really be the best use of your time, considering that a good post should take about 2 hours at least. The one case where this makes sense is if you have a regular blog of your own, and then you write an occassional freelance post with the primary intention of driving new traffic to your blog.

In general, the main advice I would give is: at least initially, focus more on increasing the readership of your blog. Focus on writing good content that your readers find useful, focus on ways to find new readers, and focus on ensuring that you have a clearly defined niche of your own. First get a good sized audience, then start optimizing on how to make money (and not the other way around).

  3. Hi Navin,

Getting paid for writing - We just tried to convey the methods of making money.. one of the ways is getting paid for writing.. and lets not forget. google is not god [not yet atleast:)] and there are several blogs (even popular ones) who write for paid articles. infact if google was so against the PayPerpost issue then atleast they should have removed it from their adwords - just search for “highest paid blog writers” on google and c the sponsored links.

Talking about Freelance writing - you would be suprised how much bloggers pay for a good content writer, its not just 100’s it also reaches 4 figures many times.. and even if u manage to write 1 a day (after some experiance) you can make good money much more than a journalist.. it may not be the same as owning a blog but freelance writing allows u to do more with your time (like another job or something) which could be equivalent to owning a blog.
thank you for sharing your thoughts on the advice, but sometimes some people may not have the time or the will to manage and maintain a blog, therefore the many more options.

thanks for the comment. hope i could help. and do keep commenting.. cheers.
