Cyber Crime is all over the internet space, India ranks 3rd in Phishing. To fight against Cyber Crime Agape India, a computer and mobile forensic specialist has decided to launch a special toll free number that will enable the users to inform the specialists about the crime. This number is to be official launched on 17th of this month.

In one of my articles I had discussed about how Cyber Crime has affected the Aviation Industry. This is just one part of the Cyber Crime. Cyber Crime includes a lot more than this. It includes things like pornographic MMS, online frauds, threats through e-mails. Recently a lady residing in Nagpur was duped of Rs 91,380. She was sent a mail that said that she had won a lottery worth USD 1 lakh but due to some custom problem the prize money didn’t get transferred. So she was asked to deposit money in ICICI Bank. Later, she realized she was a victim of Cyber Crime. Such incidents are very bad for e-commerce and the internet industry in general as it negatively impacts people’s perception about the medium and their willingness to use the internet as a transactional medium.

Few days back, Kotak Mahindra Bank faced a similar problem. The customers of the bank were sent a fraudulent e-mail that contained a link to a phishing website. The website collected the personal and account information about the customers. This process simplified the hacker’s job in hacking the accounts. Here is the phishing image.

Even earlier we had discovered the phishing activities on UTI bank in our earlier post last year. To stop this crime Agape has launched National Institute of e-Forensic (NIEF), Mumbai which will give a specialized forensic training to people in the field of computers and mobile. Agape plans to launch 3 more institutes in the metropolitan cities by the end of the financial year. NIFE’s mobile forensic lab will travel all across the country to spread awareness and educate people on Cyber Crime. This initiative of directly reaching the people will turn out to be beneficial.

According to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT IN) 2340 websites have been hacked by the end of May and 5200 by the end of the year. This really points towards a stronger exercise to curb the ever increasing cyber crime rate. Hopefully training efforts by NIEF would have some impact in curbing these numbers and making the web a safer place especially for e-commerce users as a bad experience can scare people away from using the web as a medium for payment.
