BSNL 500 Mbps – Now to a Smart Home Near You

Ages ago, I used to be a big fan of VSNL. Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited. The long-distance telephony company of the Indian government. It brought the Internet and also tried hard to change the telecom condition in India. That was before the Tatas bought s take in it. VSNL has been less visible since then. At least in the media. And BSNL has successfully taken over. So, BSNL introduced the mobile phone. Then GPRS on mobile phones and later the One India plan. Well, yes, all this was going parallel to other companies launching similar services, but BSNL was a government organization. And anyone who remembers his experience with the Telephone department in the nineties will know what I mean.
But BSNL continues to surprise me. It has always been the frontrunner in the Indian
telecom space, offering goodies that the users could earlier only dreamt of. It recently announced to start WiMax services soon. So, BSNL introduced 256-kbps internet for the home user, just for Rs.500. Then came the plan for 2Mbps speeds for the home user. And that was mindblowing. I mean, 2Mbps, when some ISPs were still giving 64kbps plans ! Wow ! That was my reaction.
And as I remember all those peak points, comes the news of BSNL’s plans to offer 100Mpbs and – hold your breath – 500Mbps speeds. To home users!
Now that is what I call leap.
The plan is to provide connectivity enable homes to become “Smart Homes”. Remote controlled light, fans, refrigerators, one central entertainment server streaming music to your room and kitchen, automatic downloading of music, latest movie tickets booked and delivered to your mobile phone, with the movie review. You got the picture. Many of these applications will require mammoth amount of bandwidth. The 100-500Mbps is for this.
Optical Fibre technology will be used for delivering such high speeds. Fibre Optic is cables
capable of transmitting signals, in the form of light signals. As opposed to Copper cables, which carry electrical signals, signal sent through Fibre Optic is lightening swift. Literally, as there are light beams carrying the signals. Losses are minimized too. All the major telecom companies have networked the country with Fibre Optic cables. Even Indian Railways have laid its own cables.
So, in the normal 2 Mbps speeds, we have Fibre Optic cables running till the local
exchange. From there on, the signals, to your house travel on usual Copper cable. In 100 Mbps technology, Fibre Optic cables will continue till tour building premises. From there, to individual home, it will be copper cable. In 500 Mbps, the entire stretch will consist of Fibre Optic.
A lot of other applications like IPTV, gaming, video-on demand will be possible when BSNL launches these services.
With plethora of web-based startups, WiMax connectivity and BSNL’s new plans, I see India emerging a hot spot to look out for innovation in the Internet and ISP space. I, for one, am definitely excited to see how things shape up in the coming weeks.

What ever they are claiming about is not correct. I have 250 Rs/Month plan from BSNL but speed is not good enough
LOL. I just can’t stop laughing at BSNL
Tell them to first provide 512 Kbps uninterrupted broadband and then drwam about 500 Mbps.
Why would one require a 100Mbps + connection to control your light, fans, refrigerators… ? Its news to me if they are driven by broadband bits andn ot Electricity
Well in technology world functionality comes first and feature next.
I would be Happy if they can provide a good 2 Mbps broadband internet connection all over the country …
If they can give 2MBps unlimited connection at around 999Rs per month, Then Its GREAT NEWS for me
yea i agree with Sarathy!
looks kind of amazing and i wud agree with sarathy and harshil
@Sanjay
Yes, I agree, the service needs to be improved
@Chetan
BSNL has been trying constantly to improve the broadband penetration. Being a government organization, it has to subsidize many of its services, but despite of this, it has managed to clock descent profits year-on-year. Even if some of their services have not been up to date, i would still pin my hopes on BSNL. 100 Mbps sounds too good to ignore.
And I don’t think the article suggests anywhere that 100 Mbps = 1kW electricity. So, you’ll still need electricity. And relaxe, this is no news. All it says is, you can control them remotely.
@Harshil, Nicholas
Agreed!
BSNL has actually been doing a commendable job with their BB plans in India, possibly the most affordable of the lot. I have used BSNL, MTNL, Airtel, Reliance & VSNL (Tata Indicom) services and BSNL is comparable in speed and stability to any of the others, in fact better than my experience with Reliance or Tata Indicom. Their customer service is getting better and better and more responsive all the time (except weekends!) and I am happy with the steady service I have been enjoying.
S it s interesting… but it s unbelivable because the max speeed of the net providers in japan itself s 100Mbbs…
