Microsoft India Gets Innovative, Introduces New Email Domain For India!
Microsoft India recently launched a new email domain just for Indian users. The new email domain name is @live.in. This means that your email id will be yourname@live.in apart from the normal yourname@hotmail.com. Microsoft is on the rampage of introducing this new email domain name globally with country specific extensions. This new domain name remains to be the default domain name located at web address: http://mail.live.com when users choose to sign up for Windows Live Hotmail/ Windows Live Messenger/ Windows Live Services.
Windows Live Services Product Head - Samir Saraiya says:
“The new Live.in domain will give customers the chance to get a new name with a domain address more clearly associated with the new suite of Windows Live services. The Live.in id also opens up a whole new set of possible names so customers have a new opportunity to sign up for an ID name they really want”.
Live.in users can access the following Windows services:
Windows Live Messenger.
Windows Live Spaces.
Windows Live Mail.
Windows Live SkyDrive Beta.
Windows Live Photo Gallery.
Windows Live Writer.
Windows Live Family Safety.
Windows Live Calendar Beta.
Xbox Live.
Live Search.
Microsoft seems to be making changes to its email services as much as possible unlike Yahoo! which hasn’t changed its static version much since a long time. Moreover, Microsoft now offers 5 GB of space for Indian users who sign up for their live services and this will definitely motivate people to sign up for its e-mail services. Indeed, I find Yahoo! creating similar ideas around Microsoft’s idea of outlook-like mailboxes which are very convenient to read emails. Meanwhile, the option to choose ‘@hotmail.com’ still remains to be choosen from the drop down menu. Thus, email addresses ending with @live.in remain as an additional service apart from messenger, hotmail or other passport services.
This new addition to the MSN family of services though is welcomed heartily by most people, the experience of the end user has definitely become better. However, we will have to see more features such as chat, IM, etc added to the live email services. The competition is getting better in the email services space. MSN, Yahoo! and Google are taking on each other as much as possible as the war gets heated up.

hmm, a live in relationship with microsoft
many will still prefer to retain their old email Ids.
the live.in email services has some limitations around the number of people you can send out emails to at a time… i could not send it out to my group of 14 people using WIndows Live Mail as it said that there were too many recipients.
What’s so “innovative” about introducing a new domain to the mix?
