Since the time Borland founder, Philippe Kahn invented the camera phone in a hospital room while his wife was having a baby (also responsible for the invention of photo blog, which later became the million dollar business). Since then there has been a great revolution in mobile industry. Who could have thought that a simple device like a mobile phone will make your life much easier and faster? Every day new mobiles with better features are hitting the market. Some seems to be appealing while the rest being flops.
Very Often a new feature in cell phone keeps on adding, but one feature which is really worth upgrading is: a built in camera. Mobile phones with cameras have now become the new subscriber base for the digital photo portals, which provide online image printing services.
So here is what can you do with your camera phone? The number of answers keeps on increasing every second but still here are the few common ones that might just interest you:
- You no longer need to carry a camera you can now get phones with 10 mega pixels.
- You can take spontaneous pictures and also get them printed.
- Blog from anywhere.
- Keep others updated as you travel (make your friends jealous by sharing your vacation pictures immediately).
- E-mail pictures.
- Send and receive pictures via Bluetooth

So now all the beautiful memories, once upon a time captured on your cell phone can be printed online. In India, currently there are online digital photo portals like Snapfish (HP), Picsquare, ZoomIn, iTasveer who are targeting the Internet users. But with better internet connectivity on mobile phones this scenario will change. We have also blogged about online photo sharing and printing gaining grounds in India(have a look it will give you much more clear picture).
Manish Agrawal, CEO, Picsquare, says, “There is a huge potential as the penetration of mobiles with cameras is much higher than digital cameras.” For these portals today, their subscribers are the Internet users who have digital cameras and access their service online.
According to Gartner, during 2006, the digital camera market in India was $110 Million and further growth around 20-22% CAGR is expected by 2011.
Current internet connectivity speed on mobile phones is really disappointing. As telecom networks are developing, one can expect data transfer to become much faster and superior. Facilities like money transfer and mobile wallets will make the payments much faster. Currently, large metros are being targeted by the online digital photo service players.
In the near future, mobiles with camera and Internet could become a big catchment’s area for these portals. The online printing is still in its infant stage in will require some time to gain acceptance from people. The question that arises here is it going to gain success immediately, as not all Indian users use phones with camera. Also, if you wish to have a better quality pictures printed, you will surely need a cell phone with higher mega pixels which will cost much higher plus additional charges will be applied for getting your pictures printed.
