These days Google seems to be very busy. The latest news from Google Research lab of India is that they are developing a voice-based search feature that allows callers to ask for information on neighborhood restaurants, services and local entertainment.
There are many sites on net which provides you the same information, but that’s completely on internet. India’s Internet population is growing for sure, but still many people are deprived from benefits of internet. This voice based search feature (i.e. telephone) might be handy for them.
“For nearly 35% of the population who may never have access to a computer, this (telephone) may be the only way for accessing information,” Prasad Ram, head of Google’s research and development in India, told a Computer Society of India conference last week.
Google’s voice algorithm is also being tested and trained to recognize English words in different accents. A possible case of Indian accents being in the focus as well. The voice service will keep giving answers over the phone until the user selects the right option.
From past one year Google is aggressively building a database for local and text-based search on mobile phones in India. Besides Google there are conventional business directories or yellow pages service providers such as Just Dial, Times of India, Forbes, and many more who give out business information to callers.
Prior to Google, the Bangalore-based research unit of Hewlett-Packard Co. had limited success as they had attempted to build a local voice response system for Indian Railways that allowed callers in cities such as Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata to ask for train arrival and departure timings .
It will be interesting to see whether Google’s voice based search can generate accurate results, unlike pc based search where a query throws up multiple results. In case if it does not, then it will surely be pain in ass for the caller as that will just be waste of time for them. This stands as a big challenge for Google.
