Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Exchange Ltd (MTNL), the local telephone and mobile services provider has recently launched its Short Messaging Services in 11 languages. MTNL has partnered with Geneva Software Technologies Ltd to offer these services. This SMS service now will be available in 11 different languages which includes Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, Telugu and Gujarati.

The charges will be Rs. 1/- for post paid customers and Rs 2/- for pre-paid customers. This service will enable villagers to send sms’s to other people in their local languages and make them use these services more often. The service seems to be launched especially for the local people living in towns, villages and people who do not know English .

Offering SMS service in different local languages is a very good idea at the end of the day. This service will definitely help in booming trade and commerce across the country. Since MTNL has already started this multilingual SMS service, it would be interesting to see whether BSNL and other service providers start offering this particular service. If MTNL’s competitors start offering these services, it might lower the costs of this particular service across the whole mobile market. Also, the service should be very user friendly otherwise the service would not be used so often by the rural people.
