When the social networking sites are creating buzz how can Indian Companies be left behind. After HLL’s portal - Sunsilk Gang of Girls which became very popular mainly due to heavy offline advertising and Entrepreneurs entering into social networking world Like Big Adda, Bharat Student, Mingle Box which got funded…. It’s now Cavin Kare, the Chennai based FMCG who has announced the launch of its new social networking portal Spinz.in
Mr Ramesh Viswanathan, Executive Director of the company, of the Rs. 600 Crore talcum market said that “spinz.in is an interactive Web site offering a plethora of information ranging from hippest hangout in cities to chatting and gaming.”
This social networking site is just another way to promote their brands. Also there are plenty of Indian social networking sites which have hardly any active users. Recently I myself have visited many of them and found it to be boring as they had nothing new to offer and they lacked in number of members registered with them too. Spinz.in networking site is a bad attempt in the world of social networking sites. The opening page made in flash takes much of the time to load and nothing seems to be attractive. So, Mr. Viswanathan please tell us what has your “spinz.in” got to offer us after all? The Indian social networking sites are far behind when compared with orkut, facebook and others.
“With great powers comes great responsibilities” a beautiful line from movie Spider Man is something what we need to relate with our lives and especially with social networking sites. Power of social networking sites is growing and as majority of Indian users are active members of orkut and facebook. Indian Government now feels the heat. With growing popularity of these networking sites the Defence Ministry of India are now taking steps to ensure that military secrets are not being leaked through networking sites like orkut, though no violations have been reported so far.
Defence Minister AK Antony said that “Defence personnel are periodically sensitized to nuances of military security and the implication of sharing classified information with strangers on social networks. They are also aware of the implications of such sharing under the Official Secrets Act,”
He also added that “No report pertaining to sharing of classified defence information on social networking sites involving defence service personnel has come to the notice of the government.”
Stern Action will be taken against the defaulters using internet as a medium to leak defence secrets. Measures are also being taken to ensure that foreign intelligence agencies do not gain access to India’s military secrets through the Internet. The measures also include sensitization of defence and civilian personnel at all levels, with special attention paid to new entrants at training institutes. Regular policy guidelines being issued for compliance and audits undertaken by in-house teams to locate any breach, the minister stated.
Yes social networking sites are popular, especially among younger generation ( approx age 10 yrs – 50+). But as it is suppose to help in connecting people, it seems to be doing the opposite. Today on many networking sites stuffs like porn are being promoted on a grand scale. Also there are many hackers out there who use these networking sites to pass on the information to their end users. It almost becomes difficult to track them as there are thousands of users in these sites who every second send out messages. Security companies should come up with an application or software which can ban or track some suspicious activities, though it won’t be a successful idea to go on with but for starters it isn’t that bad .
