There are many of these computer worms/trojans (also called bots) which can infect your PC, and when infected, they discreetly connect to a master computer via the internet and follow instructions which frequently include sending out spam. These computers then become a part of a 'botnet' and are controlled by the bot-herder(s). Now there are many reasons why people have 'bots' running on their computers and why they dont realize it. Most people dont have genuine software (OS, antivirus, etc..) and so it cannot be updated to automatically patch holes and vulnerabilities of software. Those that do have genuine software dont care to patch/update to the latest versions. Also most people using computers have little or no knowledge of basic computer safeguards and will click any and everything when online. It is very easy to get duped into downloading and installing any rogue software via phising, social engineering, spam, etc..
