India’s contribution towards spamming is increasing. Here are the stats - 76 per cent of e-mails originating from India are almost spams. Compared with top 25 spam producing nations India’s contribution is only 1% so far, but the figures aren’t good as they are rising at a rapid speed. As the internet population in India increases one can expect more of such spams.

I guess, at some stage you all people must have got some Porn or Viagra mails. They are common spam mails which millions of people daily receive around the world, which they think to be an irritating advertisement (not for all, as for some it can be useful and entertaining).

In a written reply, Communication and Information Technology Minister Mr. Raja informed the Lok Sabha: “As per a study conducted on internet security by one of the international industry leaders, the spam origination in India amounts to 76 per cent.”

Further he adds - however, when compared with top 25 spam-producing countries, India accounts for only one per cent of the spam mails.

You all must be thinking – so what’s the harm in it? My mail has got spam filter and I am protected from spams and what harm can a spam mail do?

Well, the spam mails that you receive can contain potential virus which can easily wipe off your computer data. It’s not always the spam filters work for you. At times I do receive spam mails in my inbox even though my spam filter is on. Many people are still unaware about what spams are and how harmful they can be.

The new age spammers are using various methods to send spam mails which many a times contains viruses. The most known techniques are e-cards, dating and porn mails and much more.

In this regard, The Department of Information Technology has received a proposal from CBI seeking funds to set up investigation and training facilities for cyber crime investigations with an outlay of Rs 363 lakhs for duration of one year at CBI Academy, Ghaziabad.

Stressing only on training Police officials will do no good. As it is a common man who needs to be more educated in this respect. They should be made aware about how cyber criminals operate in cyber space and what measure can they take to make their pc more secure from spammers and hackers.

  1. It is not that there are many hackers from india actively sending spam worldwide, but rather many tens of thousands of PCs (in india)that have been turned into zombies for sending out spam (by hackers mostly from outside india).

There are many of these computer worms/trojans (also called bots) which can infect your PC, and when infected, they discreetly connect to a master computer via the internet and follow instructions which frequently include sending out spam. These computers then become a part of a ‘botnet’ and are controlled by the bot-herder(s).

Now there are many reasons why people have ‘bots’ running on their computers and why they dont realize it. Most people dont have genuine software (OS, antivirus, etc..) and so it cannot be updated to automatically patch holes and vulnerabilities of software. Those that do have genuine software dont care to patch/update to the latest versions.

Also most people using computers have little or no knowledge of basic computer safeguards and will click any and everything when online. It is very easy to get duped into downloading and installing any rogue software via phising, social engineering, spam, etc..
