The Internet is growing at a rapid pace. Indian technology companies are on the verge of capturing the global internet devices market. Ichip Technologies, a Hyderabad based technology company, has developed an internet device ‘@box’ for entertainment, education and communication purposes by making an investment of Rs. 10 Crore which they plan to install in 1 million households within the next 1 year. The good news is that the device will be priced at around US $100.00 which is approximately Rs. 4000/- only as 1$ =Rs. 40.

K A Padmanabham, chairman & managing director of Ichip India proudly declaring their ambitions spoke:

“At about $100 per piece, every Indian household would be able to access Internet at home. The hardware, operating system and the software are developed by our company. It is an easy to use unlike a personal computer, The device offers standard definition support to a low cost TV and providers interfaces to a TV, monitor and HDMI enabled flat panel TV,”

The company has filed 4 patents for the technology. The company stands to start the commercial production of the internet device by March next year and is currently in talks with manufacturers from Thailand, South Korea and China as well as is looking forward to the possibility of manufacturing the device within India at a low costs.

Ichip India is in talks with telecom operators and broadband service providers such as BSNL, Bharti and MTNL to launch services like IPTV (Internet-Protocol TV) and VOIP (Voice-Over-Internet-Protocol).

The company plans to offers users the facility to integrate Television, Computer, and Phone into one through this device and the device wont require any fancy bandwidth connection. This device comes along with a keyboard, joystick & mouse interface, and runs on a tractor battery, that too without an air-conditioner.

The device seems to be designed for students, home users and people using the internet for communication purposes. The question stands to be whether this device will lure the average internet user into using it frequently. If the company is successful in luring the average Indian internet user into buying the device, the company can succesfully compete with international players and capture a huge chunk of the global internet users community.
