Amar Chitrakatha was the premier comics brand in India. My parents always talked about how they have grown up on Amar Chitra Katha. Though I saw a few copies, I wish I had seen the time when everyone read, owned and exchanged Amar Chitrakatha.
Somehow, the guys missed the bus. Earlier, it seemed they missed to become the Marvel or DC Comics of India. And now, looking at all the animation movies, it’s quite apparent that they missed even more. Now ACK Media has acquired the brands Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle. Further it plans to do a digital take on these brands. Starting with the revival of Amar Chitra Katha Illustrated Classic. Also in the kitty are the plans to launch The ACK Online Store and TinkleOnline.com.
ACK media plans to tap the IP of Amar Chitra Katha to create digital content in a multitude of formats including games, print, DVDs online services film and TV.
Animation industry in India is just hotting up. After the success of Hanuman, Percept Picture Company is now coming up with Hanuman 2. Even Karan Johar has announced his animation film. Yashraj Studios will be making and distributing animation films in collaboration with Disney. Even gaming scene in India is on a rise. The sale of Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 has been good. And Indians are ready to shell out money for entertainment. ACK Media needs to move and move fast. Even Virgin Comics has released a new Ramayana comics. The market is just blooming, and if ACK can make really engaging content and release them timely, they can just put the Amar Chitra katha brand back on the burner.
This is coming of age of a brand. With times, Amar Chitra Katha failed to innovate and players like Diamond Comics and Raj Comics took over. Modern day children are more familiar with Nagraj, Dhruv and Chacha Chaudhary. However, the present time presents an opportunity. The customer inclination is moving from offline traditional comics to digital and online animation. If ACK Media can tap the opportunity and create compelling content and present it in a convenient way, they have another chance to become the king of children’s content.
