When you might have just thought my mobile phone is much safer than pc which is very often attacked by viruses, this may make you think twice. After PC the hacker’s new playground has been mobile phones for some time.

India being an emerging market for mobile industry, services like sms has become very popular among the people. Millions of sms are being sent all over the country during a day. This has caught eye of new generation hackers, sms like you have won a prize are being sent to mobile users probably containing dangerous Trojan.

McAfee, which calls the process smishing (SMS phishing), has reported that users are receiving SMS messages with the following text: We’re confirming you’ve signed up for our dating service. You will be charged $2/day unless you cancel your order“.

The text messages ask the user to register at a website and hackers try to get individual’s financial data by asking him to validate a bank transaction.

This phenomenon is yet another indicator that cell phones and mobile devices are becoming increasingly used by perpetrators of malware, viruses and scams, David Rayhawk, mobile threat researcher at McAfee, wrote on the company’s Avert Labs blog.

More virus, spam and phishing attacks on mobile phones can become a common scenario for users using SMS, mobile internet connections, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

With a new technology, comes a new threat and more of these threats are expected in near future. Srikiran Raghavan, regional head, RSA Security suggests that mobile users, especially ones with high-end devices, deploy some form of mobile anti-virus protection to quell potential smishing threats. McAfee, RSA Security, Trend Micro, Symbian and Symantec offer products to secure mobile devices among others.
