Nokia has plans to enter the internet service space. The revenues will be generated from advertisements. The service will offer songs, video clips, games and other downloadable stuff. Some of the “premium” content like new songs will not be free and Nokia India is structuring the pricing strategy for it. Under the brand name “Ovi”, Nokia India will offer services with brand names such as Nokia Music Store (Music Shopping service), Nokia N-Gage (Gaming service) and Nokia Maps (Navigation service)
Internet service has been a hot ground lately with many new startups benefiting from it. Nokia seems to tap this market and create an alternative revenue stream for itself. Seems like sometimes being the number one is just not enough. Besides being the largest mobile handset maker, Nokia also wants to profit from the growing internet service industry. Makes sense for a company that wants to grow with the customer. Nokia was once a wood-pulp company producing rubber. It’s the vision of the company that transformed it from producing rubber to being the largest handset maker in the world. The internet sure has opened up new avenues. Newer players are entering and creating newer business battleground. Although they are not directly trespassing on the pastures of the old, established businesses, that is just apparently. In the long run, the businesses need to adapt themselves. Nokia would not have been Nokia if it had not changed its business from processing wood pulp to making mobile handsets.
