OneFamily.com – Now Get Your Uncle, Grand Dad and Niece to Network!

onefamilyWe have blogged about social networking taking over the world but how about social networking taking over your family! I guess nothing can get more embarrasing for a teenage girl than have her 45+ something daddy join orkut or facebook and interact with her friends!! (Im not kidding this is a real life example i came across). So how does one network with family but keep them away from ones friends?

Well now you have a solution.. Ibibo which is owned by MIH India has launched OneFamily.com a social network for Family members. So you can have you uncles, aunts, grandad and grandads cousin all on the network! Internationally this concepts has been around and there have been a few sites that have been running this kind of a social network. But this is surely a first for India.

I guess building this network ill be difficult but if Ibibo does manage to get some serious stickiness and good traction then this social network could a hud for discussions ranging from family gossips to marriages, deaths, business troubles, events, family picnics etc!

All in all a innovative move by Ibibo atleast by being a different kind of a social network. But what remains to be seen is how they execute the concept! After all they did make a mess of the blogging at Ibibo with all their cash rewards! Also even in the case of onefamily they have ibibo logins maybe onefamily could have done better as a standalone network because having ibibo means one brand perceptions bogs the other down. Also when one signs up there is an option to add friends as well which doesn’t make sense so early as if its only family then it surely becomes exclusive.

I think the MIH guys are good at the products they build but somewhere they are not able to build their marketing and engagement through these products. Hope they get that right this time.

  1. I heard ibibo has shot up to something like 16th place on Comscore rankings for India. is this true? If it is, they’re obviously on to something that people are taking to – contrary to your argument about their marketing and engagement not working. Of course, I could be wrong about the data – any way of confirming?

  2. Josh : You are absolutely correct. Have you checked out ibibo.com lately. They have lots of features and applications inside a users’ social network. Once you sign in you realize the difference. Frankly! I did not like some strategies earlier. But they seem to be doing lots of right things!

  3. @Josh & @pyaaztechie: I agree they have some good guys from RHR networks who build stuff like bixee and other web 2.0 applications but one the whole MIH has to still get its marketing approach right for user to come in and stick around.

  4. hey its great … i have to these sites.. and they frequently come with something new always… which is appreciating… and they were genuine as they make payouts to month winners… its great that they have started this family cocept quite diffrent from what other sites do…
all the best and do well.. wish u luck

  5. Don’t forget http://www.familyden.com. Its a family social network where you can create a profile and connect with your relatives and share videos and photos. The site is nice because it is private and you can decide who sees each posted item.
