According to an e-commerce survey conducted jointly by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB, the consumer internet market in India is estimated at Rs 9,210 crore by end 2007-08. As India is becoming an emerging economic power, consumers are spending lot on online products and services, the theft of bank account or personal credit information on e-commerce sites has become very common scenario.
Vijay Mukhi, President of the Foundation for Information Security and Technology said India is a huge market for criminals. It is very easy to break in ones computer and steal passwords and bank details through phishing and keylogging.
According to the 2007 Consumer Reports State of the Net, wireless users face additional risks. The situation is worse for those who use their home computers with a wireless router and do not take basic precautions such as enabling encryption.
As new anti hacking tools and softwares are being introduced in markets to fight against cyber crime. Criminals are coming out with new ways to break into ones computer, latest being the e-card virus boom. Recently keyloggers and other spyware that steals passwords and sensitive data have become a common practice. It’s impossible to surf the Net without security programs being installed (I have Symantec IS and PrivacyKeyboard running). Carelessness about protection may lead nowadays to serious troubles. It’s better to spent time and money finding suitable anti-spyware than to suffer greater losses after all.
