Festivals have always been the catalyst for sale, be it online or offline. This year around Diwali has proven to be a major driver for online sales. Compared to last years Rs115 crore, this year Diwali sales are expected to reach Rs 250 crore this year (according to IAMAI)
So what’s selling??
As compared to last years sales where half the sales of Indiaplaza.com were due to hampers and sweets gifts, this year Electronics has been the cause of the major online sales. Mobiles phones, cameras, Mp3 players have taken the big chunk of total online sales.
“The most purchased product of this shopping reason is undoubtedly mobile phones. The bestseller on the site over the past few days has been Sony Ericsson’s W500i” said Mr. Neeraj Sanan, Marketing Head of Web 18, the firm that owns Compareindia.com
Other popular gifts for the season range from Mp3 Players to Television Sets to even jewellery and gold coins which have held third place in terms of sales after mobile phones.
Conclusion –
Festive seasons have and always been the key driver for online sales and we can see the trend of online purchasing increasing almost Two folds, From contributing 5% of sales in 2006 to 45% in 2007 (Indiaplaza) Electronics are clearly the preferred choice at this point which according to me will remain for quite sometime. With the Indian economy booming & users having higher purchasing power we can surely expect the revenue sales to double in the coming years. Also users have started accepting the online medium to purchase products and with the growing no of internet users we can see the online sales revenues rising only in one direction.
