mapmyindia navigatorIn a bid to extend its corecompetency of providing local maps MapmyIndia has gone ahead and launched a physical version of the virtual mapping product. MapMyIndia Navigator is a new product that uses GPS (global positioning system) and on-screen maps and voice instructions inorder to guide travellers to the travel route they are finding.

Along with this navigator device mapmyindia has also launched a gprs dowloadable software called Wayfinder Navigator, which can be used at a monthly subscription of Rs 400. The software will work on all GSM phones with GPRS capability.

There is surely a market for such kind of device and services especially on the mobile phone. Whats important though is how user friendly and detailed these maps would be on the device. After all it could be simpler to just ask someone on the road for directions rather than spend 10 minutes.

The mapping space seems to be getting hotter day by day. Though Google still is  still the leader when it comes to maps players like mapmyindia and now supposedly even reliance with big maps is looking at entering this space.

Though Mapmyindia is leaving no stone unturned when it comes to marketing this offline product. It plans to tieup with car manufacturers, malls, atms etc inorder to build adoption and usage for the product and make it a necessity rather than a option for users. It is also planning to break the language barier by going vernacular in regional languages. Overall it does look like this could be the future of car navigation. But at a price of 22,000 rupees it may just penetrate the top end of the car buyer market.

  1. 400 rs / month is very high for their way find navigator software and no one would use it.

U have to pay additional gprs charges to your service provider, instead i use google maps in my gprs enabled symbian os which is worthwhile compared to this. After all its free !
