Old is Gold. The phrase says it all. The older generation is taking the internet space with furore and is making the younger generation feel more enthusiastic about social networking and blogging on the internet.

Maria Amelia Lopez, a 95 year old blogger who calls herself “The world’s Oldest Blogger” from a village called ‘Sanxenxo’ which is located in the northern rainy region of Galicia in Spain, blogs about her life and the internet on her blog “Amis95.blogspot.com“. Her blog attracts at least 60,000 readers regularly from around the globe and as diverse as Brazil, Russia, Venezuela, Chile and Japan.

“Today is my birthday and my grandson, who is very stingy, gave me a blog” is the first line written on Maria’s blog by her 35 year old grandson Daniel who is assisting her by taking dictation as she suffers from cataract and cannot see computer screens clearly. While speaking about how she got interested in blogging, she says:

“At first I thought a blog was just a type of paper notebook,” said Lopez, a great grandmother. “When I saw my grandson using the internet, it caught my attention. I said to myself ‘What’s this? You can find out about anything. I want internet!”

A lot of people, mostly teenagers who are generally 18, 14 or 13 years old, comment on her blog to talk to this very enthusiastic blogger and ask questions or even advices on various aspects of life. Her blog has put her in touch with the younger generation which she had never ever imagined would happen to her at this age but now is feeling embraced by the adulation and attention that she is receiving. She is feeling very enthusiastic about talking to the younger generation and feels very special. The great granny says:

“No one pays any attention to old women any more. Not many people love us. But I was surprised by the internet, because young people who were 18 years of age, or 14 or 15, tell me about their lives and what they think and ask for my advice,”

She has been covered on major newspapers such as Reuters and New York Times as well as been interviewed by OhMyNewsInternational and the interview is published on their site. Maria blogs about her long life which started happily and then had to pass through the ‘vicious’ civil war of Spain and the following years which were ruled by Dictator General Francisco Franco. She has been congratulated by the current Prime Minister of Spain Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in writing.

Though Lopez calls herself “The world’s oldest blogger”, Olive Riley who is a 108 year old woman blogger is the oldest blogger known. We had even blogged about her on WATBlog when she celebrated her 108th birthday. We had even blogged about oldies going the social networking way on Sagazone! The web is fast filling up with opportunities for oldies to make a mark in their lives and connect with people from all over the world. Oldies are taking the internet space with a bang and soon are going to make the youngsters feel competition! ‘Old is Gold’, so true.
