Microsoft to expand R&D in India

Hmm. Microsoft launching XBox Live in India. Microsoft launching Silverlight in India. Microsoft partnering with Reliance for IPTV in India. And now, my fourth post in recent times on Microsoft. Ahhh…no wonder some of my friends call me Microsoft evangelist. Come on guys, its Microsoft, it knows how to stay in news. I am just following the news.
Ok, so the latest development is that Microsoft is planning to jack up its R&D facility in India. India has a lot of potential software skills. A large part of this remains untapped. Many of the students prefer going in big outsourcing firms like TCS, Infosys etc. Microsoft is putting thrust on its Microsoft India Development Centre. Microsoft already has two research centers in India – at Hyderabad and Bangalore.
I have always maintained that Microsoft is a smart company. They have learnt from their and others mistakes. They know how to act and when. It understands that India is crucial. With the Indian IT market expected to touch $ 65 billion by 2009, Microsoft knows it cannot ignore India. So it is focusing on developing Intellectual Property from India.
Sometimes back, Microsoft also announced that it’s going to open a university for education in India. Microsoft is known to be very helpful (aggressive) in spreading awareness about its technologies among developers and students. It is this strategy of Microsoft that has helped a wide adoption of Microsoft products and technologies not only by end udders but, importantly, also by developer community at large. Microsoft played this card right and sped ahead of Apple. Anyways, more on that, later.
Right now, I am just happy that Microsoft is focusing on India
