For ages now we have been listening about Mobile TV. Different people comprehend this differently. The service that Airtel has been testing in Gurgaon, and even reliance plans to roll out soon is “IPTV”. In this, the internet/telecom network is utilized to deliver TV content to your screens. TV screens. Mobile TV refers to the transmission of TV signals to one’s mobile screen directly. You can then watch the TV on your mobile screen. Can be a good value add-on, and after the talks of “IPTV”, was a natural progression. The call rates in India are already lowest in the world, so it’s through value added services like these that the operators plan to make all their money.

Now the government has initiated the process of Mobile TV introduction in India. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has received feedback from 30 concerned players. Now there are two issues which need to be solved. One is the regulatory issues. In the Indian scenario it’s seen as a telecom service. This is not the case in Europe, where it seen as a broadcast service. Government also needs to decide on the technologies so that all the technologies are treated equally. Different players may choose different technologies to deliver the mobile TV, but at the end of the day, it should be seen as Mobile TV service. This is similar to the situation in telecom. Although different players use different technologies (GSM or CDMA), the end result is that they all are treated as cellular service providers.

Another issue that needs work is the selection (and tweaking) of the actual technology itself. Two competing technologies are DVB-H (DMB Video Broadcast for Handhelds) and MediaFLO, a proprietary standard developed by Qualcomm – developers of the CDMA standard. Each operator should be encouraged to use the technology that it deems fir for its network. But yes, the content must be available to all the users irrespective of her choice of the service providers. Only then will the end user appreciate the real value of the Mobile TV. A mechanism for inter-network content revenue sharing can be worked out between the operators. But this should not be a concern of the end user.

On the whole, a promising service with lots of potentials. This will also ensure a new era in content creation. The made-for-mobile content will see its emergence. More choice for the consumers. Aur kyaa chaahiye

  2. What will this do for competitors, and their relationships between each other, as well as their relationship with a country’s authority?
