 Mobile Applications

After doing everything that can be done with the Web, under the branding of Web 2.0, developers and companies now head for the ubiquitous one. Mobile phone. And yes, they have chosen to call it Mobile 2.0. For one, I have always maintained that calling it by some fancy jargon didn’t make as much sense as adding some real value to it. So, if there are new services in the offing for mobile consumers, or is it just plain marketing effort by some of the companies. Well, considering what I read, the former seems to the case.

Nokia, recently organized its developer summit in Bangkok. Some of the initiatives were good. Persistent Systems, a Pune based company displayed a mobile-based enterprise content search tool where the popular search engines can be integrated with a corporate database like SAP or Oracle and the contents can be searched from a mobile phone.

This feature definitely packs a punch. Something for serious business users. It certainly adds a lot of value to the mobile phone, and for one, I will be happy to pay for it. This ensures I can search my database even while on the move. I am now (thankfully) not compelled to lug my laptop around.

Mobien Technologies, another Pune based player displayed a tool which synchronizes with the ERP. Using this, even a printer can be operated remotely. Imagine this. You are sitting in your conference hall when the manager calls. He needs a print. Now. You search for the file, on the enterprise LAN, on your mobile phone, sitting right there in you cabin, and then, on the mobile itself, search for the printer address for the Manager’s cabin. Then fire the command. The file gets printed on the manager’s machine.

The execution is the key here. Needless to say, both these applications are heavy by nature. And running them on a mobile device can spoil the show if not done well. Much depends on how the applications are coded. Also, the compatibility of the products needs to be kept in mind.

Emails and IMs are already available on the mobile phones. Adding such enterprise level applications is a step forward in making the mobile phone a multi-functional device. Very soon, most of the things, especially those pertaining to the communication, can be performed on the mobile phone itself. PCs will be required for creating complex documents, and the mobile screen should be enough for things like search and transfer of data.
