After Yahoo, Google and Rediff now it is time for to go regional. As a part of an aggressive global expansion strategy AOL is launching Hindi and Tamil language version of internet portal in India and also launches Indian version of its video search engine called Truveo.

We have also blogged earlier that more and more sites are turning towards the regional path. So what makes them to follow the regional path? The answer is very simple competition, more and more companies are trying to capture the wider range of market by coming up with new stuff like regional sites, free add ons, free downloads and much more.

PG Ponnapa, Managing Director, AOL India Site statedThe vernacular portals are not translations of the English portal. It is more about understanding the culture of the people who read in these languages.

Besides India the video search engine of AOL, Truveo, has been launched in 15 international markets. It also plans to cover 30 more countries by the end of 2008.

Tim Tuttle, CEO and Co-Founder for AOL Video also mentionedthe site receives 40 million unique visitors per month in U.S.A”, further he also said that the company will be more experimenting with more of display and targeted advertising on its U.S site.

Since its tie-up with MTNL the company has got accessed to 70% of broadband customers in India, the company also has a tie-up with HP to have AOL built in services in its laptops beginning from January 2008.

From localization point of view AOL has no plans in near future to introduce language typing tools like those of Yahoo and Google. According to Mr.Ponnapa typing in another language is difficult. He also adds localization is catching up in India, but it might take 12-18 months to catch on.

By going regional AOL has made a remarkable statement that is here to stay and compete in the market and is ready to take on the competition. One can also expect further international products served in regional language from AOL and other companies.
