Yahoo! For all the Hindi lovers across the globe it’s good news, yahoo mail is now available in Hindi. We have been blogging about domains going regional for a long time now. Earlier in 2007, Yahoo had also launched its portal in seven regional languages (Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Punjabi and Gujarati).

Mr. IM Swaminathan Director for Communications and Community Products, Yahoo India in an interview said “The Hindi version of Yahoo Mail will be launched in a phased manner and it will be available to all users in the next two-three weeks. Initially, only the classic version of Yahoo Mail will be offered in Hindi as it is the more popular version; later on, it will be extended to new Yahoo Mail,”

Most of the services like news feeds, icons, send and write mails will be available in Hindi to yahoo members. With the help of a Hindi keyboard or the support of a Windows language program to input Hindi characters users can write and send Hindi mails to their family and friends.

Further Yahoo is globally launching the new version of Yahoo Messenger i.e Yahoo Messenger 9.0

The Key Features being a redesigned interface with newer backgrounds, adding new emoticons, forwarding offline IM’s to mobile devices and also forward incoming phone calls to phone numbers. Videos can be sent from YouTube, Yahoo Video, etc. and contacts can watch synchronized video through a sharing window. Also users can share Flickr photos or even user desktops

This shows that India is an important market for Yahoo and hence the localization of mail services is an initiative towards that and even though its moving towards social networking type features for its IM services globally its focusing on breaking the language barrier when it comes to India.
