Last week I wrote about FlauntR. The website can be used to edit the pictures online. The interface and pictures seemed good. It even automatically imported all my Flickr pictures. In all, I was satisfied with the product. This week, another company in the picture sharing business has released a new feature. Picsquare has introduced what it called Personal Photo Site. What it means is that as a user, you can create a microsite like manish.picsquare.com and host all your pictures on this. According to Manish Agarwal, co-founder, Picsquare, “the photo site creation platform will differentiate Picsquare from competitors and has tremendous value add to Picsquare users”.

I am not sure of the “tremendous value” bit, but yes, this does add some value. As an artiste, if I need to show some pictures to a prospective client, then ankit.picsquare.com makes much more sense than www.flickr.com/spqiiKl567/nbgqql9826980?a=lon&nam=a . Even as a user who wants to display all his French-trip pics to a bunch of friends, ankit.picsquare.com will be much easier to remember. OK, yes you can always send a link by email, however complicated it is, and the user doesn’t has to remember the URL, but what if you are havig a conversation on phone, or on the street, on in a Mumbai locale ? Its here that the importance of a microsite becomes apparent. Moreover, my friends can keep checking the microsite repeatedly, without even my prompting , to check what’s new in my life. And they will easily remember the name of the site.

This said, I am not sure if the service can actually hit the right spot. Of late there have been a plethora of online picture sharing websites. Just as happened with social networking site, and the average user seems quite happy with his good-old Flickr account (Not me though, those buggers refuse to show me all my pics until I upgrade). There has to be a thrust in the marketing effort if Picsquare wants this feature to succeed. Yes, it’s got potential but how much it succeeds will depend entirely on how well they market it.
