Wipro enters Second Life, Creates a Innovation Isle!
ET reports, Wipro became the first Indian Company to set up a campus in Secondlife.com. Wipro launched a Offshore Development Center (ODC) model campus with facilities like client engagement centre, learning centre, 3 floor ODC setup with cubicles, security desk at the campus entrance gate, amphitheatre, press announcements hall, basketball and volleyball courts, admin, data centre and library.
Wipro is also bringing new capabilities to corporate recruitment in 2007 via its Innovation Isle Island. Prospective candidates will be able to submit their resume at Wipro’s virtual campus
SecondLife is an online virtual world in which users create 3d avtars, interact, participate in group/individual activities and trade virual items (few real items).
Secondlife (SL) got some 10 million residents (Users) and gets arround 35k-40k users daily. If projections are correct SL will be a hub for 25 million users by 2008.
One of the most hyped technologies last year SL is dismissed by media recently
Why is it not such a good move
- SL basically comprises more of gamers and few hardcore techies.
- SL will never reach ‘mass market status’. More than 85 percent of the avatars created have been abandoned
- They are doubts about SL population, many feel the numbers are inflated and very few are active
- You need to create compelling content, to attract visitors to your island. Many brands which created Virtual islands failed to attract more than 10,000 visits per week. IBM gets approx 8,000 visitors and for that you need to spend a lot on advertising your events/conferences in SL
- Few brands who opened SL islands closed down there islands in less than a year – reason given – lack of consistent traffic. May be its not right time to enter in SL
- SL is far too slow and it’s extremely memory intensive. Lot of entry barriers
- Creating and personalizing this animated representation of yourself is tedious
Second Life’s learning cycle is too steep
Why it could be a good move?
- SL is a good opportunity for marketers to better understand how to interact with customers in a virtual 3d environment
- Brands/Marketers need to keep close watch on innovations in the virtual space as people will discover new ways to communicate and share experiences with each other
- Lot of acadamies/university are working arround secondlife, may be Wipro can work with some of the early adoptoers
- SL may help promote communication, collaboration
- SL have other benefits like media exposure
