Microsoft launches Xbox Live ! in India
Microsoft is going to launch its XBox Live! service in India.
The Live has been an important part of the overall offering from Microsoft in the gaming domain.
So, what is Live ! ? According to Wikipedia “Xbox Live is an online multiplayer gaming and content delivery service created and operated by Microsoft Corporation”. It lets anyone having an Xbox console with a Live subscription connect to others users of the service. These users can then play games together, pass on contents, and even chat. ( Interestingly, the chat client is based on an open source platform
). The user can make their friends’s list. View a list of the players she has played against and do much more.
Live Anywhere is the initiative by Microsoft to bring the Live gaming and entertainment network to a wide variety of devices including Xbox, Vista/XP machines, Mobile phones and Zune. (That, how many people actually use Zune, is a different thing altogether
). This can be interesting. Specially, knowing Indians’ affinity for gaming and entertainment content on mobile phones. The content that they will provide will hold the key. And what sells most in India ? Movies ? So, Microsoft has tied up with Percept and UTV for providing Bollywood contents for their services. Some nice marketing and Live might actually make it big in India.
Although, I am not sure how much of this will fuel the sales of the actual consoles itself. Till now, India has been a slow adopters of gaming consoles. However with broadband speed internet becoming ubiquitous and some killer applications being made available through services like Live , this may change.

Well I don’t know how much they will succeed but Ravi Venkatesan’s (Microsoft India Head)target is 100 million live connections in 5 years…. and 10 million in 3 years… If Microsoft achieves that number in whole world then they would be lucky…. I don’t see even a million user in 10 years… The best application would be watching new movies every Friday afternoon instead of going to theatres
