Extramarks.com Looking For Extra Money! Scouting 5M$ in Funding from VC’s!
Extramarks.com which is an online education portal that deals with after school online learning and revision for students of standard VI to XII according to the NCERT syllabus. Its promoted by Noida-based international BPO company Cleaveglobal E-Services Limited. According to this article ExtraMarks.com is in talks with 3 VC’s and is looking to raise over 5Million $ in funding!
ExtraMarks.com hopes to gross a revenue of 10 Million $ in year 08-09. I visited Extramarks and the first impression it gave me was of a Yahoo QnA inspired site which takes the QnA model and applies it to questions that students may have. Even in this case students answer other students questions and if you don’t get the right answer then you can ask a subject expert.
Extramarks has around 40 teachers on its rolls for offering expert guidance services and it has so far received 5,000 free registrations. They plan to monetize the site by charging a fee of Rs.1200 a year for expert advice and other services. They plan to use the money which they will be raising to target the international market and to add features.
Overall im not sure how effective their model with turn out to be because its very possible that students would answer each others questions and there maybe no need of the expert advice or very few would opt for the paid model. All in all an international audience does look more lucrative for this kind of service though im sure there will adoption issues for the paid model.

Extramarks.com have organized content based on the cbse curriculum which is unique. I’m sure they will compete with other similar portal/site.
Just wait for their next update on portal, now ExtraMarks.com have their own Tech Dev Team.

I am a teacher and also a member of extramarks.com Extramarks is a good place for students to get their queries solved but….. Do you really think the traffick on the site will still remain the same after it is monetized. I am not critisising the attempt but I frankly feel that in a place like ours no student would pay Rs.1200/- on educational sites (They won’t mind spending thousands on games and cyber zones)

Looks like a great site this, Extramarks.com. I have not come across as much subject wise content on any other site as extramarks has.
The site seems to have cracked a good idea with a lot of their own content and user generated content.
ExtraMarks.com updated the homepage with new look & feel and web 2.0 features which includes tabbed interface, dynamic loading content using AJAX.
Although the complete site is not updated, but ExtraMarks.com team is in the process to do the complete revamp very soon.
Extramarks updated the other pages too like Students, Teachers, Parents, Careers in India, Chapterwise Q & A.
Extramarks updated the Practice Papers section too.

ExtraMarks.com updated the portal to have moderated content only including the Q & A, Blogs, Classifieds, comments. This will sure help to reduce spam & offensive content on the site.
