Domain names now will be available for sale in Hindi and other Indian languages. Here is a eg of what we mean WATBlog could look like वाटब्लाग् . Hindi, Tamil, Sanskrit, Bengali, Punjabi are a few of the languages in which the domain names will be available.

There have been companies that have taken initiative to get local, google & yahoo providing services in Indian local languages. Google also offers auto complete options for hindi users which makes it simple to use. Even blogger allows you to blog in hindi.

But what about the similarity in the Indian scripts which can lead to major confusion?

National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) additional CEO Rajesh Aggarwal said “To counter this, we will block alternate identities of the same name, which can be created by different codes, except the original identity for every user. We will have a scientific formula on how the visual representation of each character in the domain name will be made. Also, we will have a simple dispute resolution policy,”

NXRI have even dropped the domain prices in order to increase registration from Rs4000 to Rs 200 (now thats what you call a discount!!)

People seem to be really taking to the service from about 300 a day to 3000 NXRI plan to reach 4lakh registrations by 2007 end.

Called IDNs (Internationalised Domain Names), these are popular in Europe (Russia, Germany) and Asia (Singapore , China, Japan, Korea). In some of these countries, IDNs registrations per month surpass those in English.

Off course Trademark owners will get first preference while purchasing these domain names. they can purchase it in the sunrise period which is expected to start Jan 08.

According to me this one of those “before its time initiatives” which is not yet ready for the market and may or may not pick up in the future. if the reason for going local is to get locals online, its a noble cause, but in a country like India which has well over 400 languages, customizing to that extent will be a mammoth task, i mean are you going to have different keyboards, softwares, websites etc for different languages. Instead English would be the preferred as the universal language considering India has ≥ 350,000,000 English speaking users, probably the highest in the world.

  1. One thing which is not clear from NIXI’s statement is how they plan to roll out the extentsions
    i.e.
    हिन्दी.in or
    हिन्दी.ईन or
    हिन्दी.इन
Hindi IDN .com has existed for years.
We own हिन्दी.com and it does not require dual keyboard to enter .com, one can type हिन्दी and press “CTRL+ENTER” in the address bar and most browsers will automtically change it to http://www.हिन्दी.com . There is a registry setting in windows and the default setting is
    http://www.%s.com

    Gautam,
We already have a hindi typo here .
Transliteration of WATBlog should be वाटब्लाग .

Moreover, “वाट” (Mumbai Hindi Slang) sounds too harsh for what your blog does.

  3. Hi Ravi,

yes u are right about the hindi extentions,we too have the same question. as i had said earlier, india has so many similar languages which has similar writing style, it will certainly become a problem going ahead.

abt the वाटब्लाग thanks the change has been made, and yes “वाट” does sound too harsh.. infact i got it from a website that converts from eng to hindi,
    Cheers ;)
