Government Logs In To Stop Spammers!
Following our posts on Do-Not-Call registry, the Indian government’s Department of Information Technology (DIT) is now gearing to launch its initiatives to safeguard Indian citizens from unwanted junk e-mails as it is certainly a security threat to Indian businesses and citizens risking their financial and security status. It is soon going to launch a ‘do-not-mail-me’ registry which will enable it to curb all those scam, spam, phishing and junk e-mails.
The government has plans to insert section 40 of Indian Penal Code into the IT Act, 2006 which will enable users of email services to take legal action against any spammer or person who sends an e-mail falsely promises monetary and other benefits.
Experts say that section 40 of the Indian Penal Code is also applicable in all those situations as well where false promises that relate to activities like indulging in flesh trading, money laundering as well as any other contract which is not legal.
The punishment attached with this provision is stringent with a minimum of 6 months in jail or according to the damage done to the victim which could extend to a period of 7 years in case the offense comes under the scanner of section 420 of Indian Penal code.
Adding further, The DIT has plans to add section 4 into the IT Act, 2006 which will be applicable to any cyber crime activity that has been done by spammers and persons outside the Indian territory.
This is great news. These steps will soon reduce the amount of junk and spam e-mails that we receive and help us save a lot of time, energy and not-to-forget our money. This is a huge relief though a lot of work still remains to be done.

you must be kidding… anyone who puts their email on that list will be insane. This is the internet not public telephony! Every email on the list will be public and spammers from across the world will send out zillions of emails to them. And you think the Indian government will then start looking out for that 15 year old spammer in rural russia to try and send him to an indian jail for six months! This is a joke really!
